Yesterday MediaTek held their Virtual Summit event where they announced the latest affordable Dimensity 700 chipset as well as the two up and coming Chromebook chipsets.

Disappointingly, they didn’t announce their latest flagship chipset but did tease us at the end of the even stating a new chipset is coming built on the 6nm fabrication process using Arm Cortex A78 cores clocked at up to 3.0Ghz.

Earlier in the day, serial leaker Digital Chat Station revealed announced that a 6nm MediaTek MT689X chipset is expected to launch soon with a similar specification to the Exynos 1080 and that it is able to achieve Antutu scores of around 600k+.

While MediaTek made no mention of the GPU, the leak indicated it will have the same Mali G78 as the Exynos.

It is quite possible that this won’t be the true flagship from MediaTek for their 2021 phones. If it does have a similar spec as the Exynos 1080 it may only have a 2×6 CPU design, and 600K+ on AnTuTu is only comparable to the current SD865+.

However, Mediatek have generally employed a 4×4 design for their high end chipsets, it was only the Dimensity 720 that dropped down to 2×6.

The claim of 3Ghz on the A78 CPU is impressive though, the Snapdragon 865+ was the first chipset to break the 3Ghz barrier, and that was on the A77.

It is expected that the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 and Samsung Exynos 2100 will both take advantage of the new ARM Cortex-X1 CPU for one big core and then three A78 cores, none of which will hit 3Ghz.

It is unlikely the new chipset will launch with the MT689X, instead it will be rebranded as some form of Dimensity chipset.
