Huawei AppGallery has 83% increase in app distribution and a 33% growth in monthly active users – How much growth in the UK, though?

Huawei regularly makes announcements that seem to defy predictions of their demise following regulations being imposed on them by the US.

In the latest press announcement, Huawei state some impressive numbers. There has been an 83% increase in app distribution and a 33% growth in monthly active users marks a year of rapid growth for Huawei’s app ecosystem 120,000 apps integrated with HMS Core are now available on AppGallery, a year-on-year increase of 118%.

The platform now has 2.3 million registered developers, a 77% increase from last year, and a diverse global audience of 530 million MAU, demonstrating its growing influence on developers and mobile users around the world.

While they are keen to state global numbers, they are a little more vague about growth within demographics.

The closest we get is a statement saying:

At the end of 2019, there were 25 countries around the world which had over a million AppGallery users. That number has now grown to 42, and we continue to see strong growth across markets in Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa.

They highlight that China is a ‘mobile-first’ society with over 904 million mobile internet users with an estimated app download figure of over 100 billion, and AppGallery has helped over a thousand overseas developers to penetrate the growing mobile economy in China in the last 12 months.

According to Statista, Huawei has over a 40% market share in China, but according to IDC, Huawei global market share saw a massive drop in Q3 2020, going from 20.2% to 14.6%, its lowest level in excess of 2 years.

I’d love to know what sort of growth AppGallery has had in the UK.

As a tech blogger, it is unlikely my experiences with tech are the same as the general population. I don’t mind using AppGallery or sideloading apps via Petal Search and finding alternatives to Google products. But is that something a regular user is willing to do?

Either way, it is good to see the AppGallery grow, and this year we should see the first phones running HarmonyOS out of the box, offering the first viable alternative mobile OS in years.

I am also a big fan of their phone hardware, I much prefer the Huawei flagship phones vs the competition, so I’d love HarmonyOS and the AppGallery to succeed in the long term.
