It is expected that AMD will announce the launch of their new Renoir desktop APUs sometime in the near future.
Sitting at the top of the pack is the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G which is an 8 core 16 thread CPU running at 3.6Ghz with a boost speed of 4.45 GHz. It then has graphics capabilities provided by a Vega 8 chip with 8 CUs to form 512 cores.
The TDP of all these APU chips it’s 65W or 35W with the 4700G being 65W.
This should give the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G a similar specification and therefore the performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. With the 3700X having 8 cores with a base of 3.6GHz boost of 4.4GHz and a TDP of 65W.
The performance of the chip is reported within the Cinebench R20 and Cinebench R15 multi-core tests. The platform used was the ASRock B550 Taichi with 16 GB of DDR4 memory. In Cinebench R20, the CPU scores 5102 points while in Cinebench R15, the CPU scores 2168 points. Both tests were carried out in multi-core scenarios.
While I have not personally benchmarked the AMD cpus, most reviews show the Ryzen 7 3800X as achieving around 5000 point in Cinebench R20 and 2100 in R15.
The similarly specced 3700X scores around 4700 in R20 and 2100 in R15.
Two multi-core benchmarks don’t exactly give a detailed analysis of the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G but it is an impressive start so far.
The need for an iGPU on a relatively high-end CPU may not be that appealing to most of us, but it would be good for none gaming PCs, media PCs, and home servers. Pricing will be important too, currently, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X is around £330 and the 3700X is around £290, if it was priced similarly it could be appealing to opt for one of these over the none iGPU options giving you a backup GPU option.
