AMD Sharkstooth 32-core Zen 2 Threadripper Spotted in Geekbench – Up To 35% Faster Than Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX

Now that the third generation AMD Ryzen processors have been launched and more recently the Epyc “Rome” 7nm server CPUs, enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for the launch of the 3rd generation Zen 2 based Threadripper CPUs.

To date, there is no confirmed release date for these HEDT CPUs, but rumours indicate that it should be this year, and possibly in October.

With that only a couple of months away, performance leaks are inevitable.

A new CPU has popped up on Geekbench, Sharkstooth, an AMD engineering sample with 32 cores and 64 thread has shown up which is the same config as the current flagship Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX.

The chip was configured with 32 cores and 64 threads and has a clock speed of 3.60 GHz. The max clock was not mentioned but the chip does come with 128 MB of L3 and 16 MB of L2 cache. Since AMD usually rounds up both L2 and L3 numbers, we are looking at a total 144 MB cache.

As this is an engineering sample it won’t have the same clocks as the release models. The Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is clocked at a base frequency of 3.0 GHz so the ES processor definitely runs at higher clocks. Other specs of the testing platform include 128 MB of DDR4 memory.

In one test the processor scored 5677 points in single-core and 94772 points in multi-core CPU performance results. In another, it scored 5932 and 93344.

Comparing to a Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, the current flagship with 32 core and 64 threads but based on the Zen+ cores,  that scores 5,300 in single and 70,000 in multi-core tests.

This puts the engineering sample at 7-10% higher in single-core results and 35% higher in multi-core.

While we can’t confirm this is definitely a 3rd gen Threadripper, it does look likely. We have seen impressive gains with Zen 2, and Threadripper shares a lot of DNA from the just-launched EPYC, and that is turning out to be a phenomenal range of CPUs for the server market.
