Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor announced to launch on Xiaomi Mi Mix 4

The trend for increasing megapixel counts is set to continue for the foreseeable future, though one has to wonder how many megapixels can fit in a phone?

Samsung has just announced the world’s first mobile camera sensor that goes beyond 100MP. The Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is a 108MP sensor for smartphones that comes as a result of a close collaboration between Xiaomi.

Samsung also has a 64MP ISOCELL GW1 sensor which it only just announced and is launching on one of the up and coming Redmi smartphones soon.

At the moment the sensor is not in production but this is expected to start this month. While it has not been confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will definitely get the sensor, Xiaomi is confirmed to be the first to use it and this is the most likely phone to launch with it.

Currently, the biggest megapixel count on phones is 48MP which is used on the Sony IMX586 and Samsung GM1 and are featured in many phones including the Black Shark 2, One Plus 7 Pro, and more.

Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX will still be a 0.8um image sensor as that is found on the 64MP sensor but increases the sensor size to a staggering 1/1.33″, a first for a smartphone camera. This helps it churn out large 12032 x 9024-pixel resolution photos, comparable to high-end DSLRs.

The large sensor size helps HMX to absorb more light in low-lit conditions. Further, Smart-ISO helps the sensor intelligently select the right ISO to match the needs of the environment. The HMX sensor is using Samsung’s Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technologies, so it will be able to generate bright, big-pixel 27MP images from pixel binning 4 pixels at a time.

The sensor also supports 6K(6016 x 3384 pixels) video recording at 30 fps.
