The Xiaomi Redmi K40 series has recently launched, and the Realme GT 5G launches next week. While the Redmi won’t see a UK launch, it will hopefully it will be launched at a later date as the Poco F3.

So how do these two new affordable phones compare with the existing Xiaomi Mi 11.

Chipset/Ram/Storage

The overall day to day performance of the phones should be about the same. They all use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888.

They all, more or less, have the same memory and storage. The K40 Pro+ has 12GB of RAM as standard, but the standard Pro has 8GB/12GB options.

Similarly, most storage options will be 129GB/256GB

Display & dimensions

The new Xiaomi Redmi K40 Pro+ has the smallest display at  6.67 inches, but it has a flat-display so the overall dimensions are similar to the Mi 11.

It also has the lowest resolution at 2400×1080 but has the same 120Hz refresh rate as the Mi 11.

Oddly, the Redmi has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, even though it uses an AMOLED display.

The Realme GT 5G hasn’t been officially announced yet so we have limited specs provided by Realme. We do know that it was feature a 6.8-inch display running at 3200×1440 with an incredible 160Mhz refresh rate.

Camera

The Redmi K40 Pro and Pro Plus are differentiation by their camera spec. So the more affordable one has

  • 64MP primary camera
  • 8MP ultra-wide camera, f/2.2, 119° FoV
  • 5MP tele macro camera

But the Redmi K40 Pro+ uses the same 108MP Samsung HM2, f/1.75 primary camera as the Xiaomi MI 11. This will make the overall camera spec very similar to the Xiaomi, that has a 13MP ultra wide, though.

The Realme has:

  • 64 MP, (wide), PDAF
  • 13 MP, (telephoto)
  • 13 MP, (ultrawide)

So the only one with a telephoto lens. I just hope the 64MP sensor is good.

Battery and Charging

The Realme has an impressive 5000mAh battery combined with an incredibly fast 125W wired charge. We don’t know if it will have wireless, but it seems unlikely knowing Realme.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 has a 4600 mAh battery with 55W power delivery and 50W wireless. I think I prefer a slower power delivery charge vs an ultra fast proprietary one, so you can easily have multiple plugs capable of the fast charge.

The Xiaomi Redmi K40 Pro+ has the lower spec with 33W PD and a 4520 mAh battery

Price

For the Redmi K40 Pro, the prices are:

  • Redmi K40 Pro:
    • 6GB/128GB: CNY 2,799
    • 8GB/128GB: CNY 2,999
    • 8GB+256GB: CNY 3,299
  • Redmi K40 Pro+:
    • 12GB/256GB: CNY 3,699

So they are all cheaper than the launch price of the Xiaomi Mi 11

The latest news from Realme VP Mr. Xu Qi Chase, states the phone will launch at CNY 2,999. He has previously stated it would be the same as the launch price of the Realme X50 Pro (CNY 3,599)

Realme (and Xiaomi) tend to launch phones with an immediate discount, so it could have a flash sale at CNY 2,999.

If we assume, the global launch will be the same price as the X50 Pro, the base model Realme GT 5G should be 600-euros or around £525, which would significantly undercut the Xiaomi Mi 11.

Overall

UK buyers can forget about the Redmi K40 Pro models for now, but we will hopefully see them soon in the form of the Poco F3.

As always, Realme is launching a highly specced phone that undercuts many of its competitors. How good it actually is, remains to be seen.
